Unit 4:

Handles on a piece/
Lidded Box
0.jpg

Plan:

- Slab roll wedge clay

- Cut out four walls (two longer than the others)

- Form box

- Cut out smaller rectangle to create lip on lid

- Fill with newspaper and add lid to box

- Add handle

- Add decoration

- Fire

- Glaze

- Done!

I am very happy with the final result, so much so that I am bummed to give it away as a gift and would like to make it again. I love the ladybugs spread throughout and the fun handle. If I were to make it again, I would fix the lid so it doesn't move around as much by making the slab wider.

Collaborative

Plan:

- Lay slab rolled clay over plate

- Smooth

- Trace ideas onto paper

- Use paper and poke holes to create an outline

- Underglaze

- Fire

- Clear glaze and gray glaze back

- Done!

I really enjoyed making this piece, and am happy with the result. If I were to do it again, I would try to smooth out the boat more and make sure the back is layered thoroughly.

Series of 4 - Coasters
0.jpg

Plan:

- Roll out clay to desired width

- Using a bowl, cut out four identical circles

- Roll out four coils

- Use four coils underneath each circle, creating a lip

- Fire

- Glaze

- Fire

- Done!

I really enjoyed the final product. They were easy to make, which was nice, and they were all very similar in size and width. I also loved using the 'exploding' glazes I used, as they gave the desired texture and effect. Overall, I really liked the pieces and they are very useful!

Monster
0.jpg

Plan:

- Cut some of the clay off the initial wedge and roll it into a ball

- Begin forming into an oval shape, scoop out the middle

- Attach side appendages

- Attach eyes and teeth

- Underglaze

- Fire

- Glaze

- Fire

- Done!

Disappointingly, the monster fell and the top two items fell with it. I tried to glaze them back on as I had seen others do, but ultimately that ended in failure as well. Besides that error, I am quite proud of how the monster turned out. I was struggling trying to figure out how to make it, so the final product actually being put together and looking coherent makes me very happy.
